Mayflower Ship Drawings

Today and all week, we have been doing a little history lesson on the Mayflower. Here is a list of some of the questions I asked to start my lesson and the answers I received.

1. Q. Who sailed on the Mayflower? A. Christopher Columbus

2. Q. What year did the Mayflower sail to America? A. 1998

3. Q. Why did the Pilgrims come to America? A. To meet the Indians

I absolutely love these kids! Of course we just celebrated Columbus day a few weeks ago and it is hard for them to transition into another ship coming to America. I taught this lesson all week and today, I had a 3rd grader answer correctly what year the Pilgrims sailed. I was so excited!

I am a new teacher, this is only my 2nd year to teach and my second school also. I am still trying to get a comfortable lay out as to what to teach and when so I taught this lesson to all of my 2nd and 3rd graders this week.

First I reminded them that we would be out all next week to celebrate Thanksgiving. Then I asked them the 3 questions from above. (answers are. 1. Pilgrims, 2. 1620 and 3. to be free from the King (that is as simple as I could get it for the little ones)). Of course you can add more questions, but remember these are 2nd and 3rd graders, all they really want to do is draw.

Next I show them an image of what the Mayflower looked like.

I use my Interwrite board to draw with the students. I have found that we have more successful drawings if we draw together to get the basic image down. The very first thing we always do is write their name! NO NAME, NO FAME!
